Brown Velvet Vest

Women’s loose-fitting vest.
Fabric: brown velvet, colored lining made of smooth canvas.
The front panel of the vest is embellished with strips of ornamentation from an antique vyshyvanka from the town of Haisyn in the Vinnytsia region, located in the Podillia region. The back of the vest is decorated with an embroidered flap.
Vests of this style were more common in the western regions of Ukraine and, due to the cost of the fabric, were considered clothing for the wealthy. Ukrainians adopted vests from France and adapted them to their own style of wear. Depending on the region, these vests were also called “horsyky,” “kamizelky,” or “leybyky.”
In the photo, the vest is styled with Embroidered shirt Nastasia.
The hand-embroidered technique on the garment is reproduced using machine embroidery.
