Men’s vyshyvanka from the collection “Embroidered Ukraine.”
The pattern on this vyshyvanka, based on a 19th-century artifact, is part of the collection of the National Museum of Ukrainian Folk Decorative Art in Kyiv. The embroidery originates from the village of Voloske in the Dnipropetrovsk region. The upper parts of the sleeves (or cuffs) of this shirt are embroidered with red and black threads. The shirt is decorated with a geometric ribbon pattern in several horizontal rows.
The sleeves of the shirt are embroidered with three plant-inspired geometric “trees,” or “broken branches”—further up the Dnipro River, these were also called “yavory.” And between the branches, arranged in three vertical stripes, are images of svargs, or svastikas—symbols of the sun and happiness.
The hand-embroidered pattern has been recreated using machine embroidery.
