The book “Embroidered Shirts of Luhansk Region”

The publication “Embroidered Shirts of the Luhansk Region from the Collection of the National Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine” showcases a unique collection of artifacts from the region, housed in the “Textiles and Clothing” of one of Ukraine’s most famous ethnographic museums and one of Europe’s largest open-air museums. The editors have digitized and provided scholarly descriptions of over 100 garments from the Bilovodsk, Bilokurakine, Kreminna, Novoaydar, Novopskov, Svatove, and Starobilsk districts. As of early 2025, nearly the entire territory of the Luhansk Oblast is occupied by Russia (the invasion began in 2014 and escalated in 2022). Therefore, the material presented here is of immense significance, as it attests that these territories were and remain inherently Ukrainian.
The authors of the book view it as a strategic priority to document and describe the cultural heritage of the occupied regions as thoroughly as possible, in order to prevent the loss of these artifacts should they be physically destroyed by the enemy during the Russian-Ukrainian war.
The book features detailed photographs of authentic shirts from the Luhansk region, along with patterns and embroidery diagrams.
