New “Hutsul Tiles” Collection

The “Hutsul Tiles” collection is inspired by the designs found on the tiles that once—and in some cases still—make up the stoves in our Carpathian Mountains.

Kakhli are ceramic tiles used for artistic and decorative purposes; they are used to decorate homes, fountains, palaces, and more. They retain heat well, which also makes them a very practical decorative option for stoves and fireplaces.

It is the Hutsul tiles that are truly unique. They feature paintings depicting the everyday life of the Hutsuls: men with plows, dancing, housewives tending to their homes, farm animals, nobility in carriages, and whimsical flowers.

In these garments, local people embodied their beliefs; the vyshyvankas were adorned with symbols, each of which had its own sacred meaning. The main symbols, which were always placed at the top of the vyshyvanka, were images of St. Nicholas and a church, serving as talismans to protect the home.

In the vyshyvankas from the “Hutsul Tiles” collection, we’ve preserved the color palette found in these works of folk art—brown, blue, gray, white, orange, and green.

The combination of these colors is as warm as the pieces from which they are taken. Anyone who has been to the Carpathians will surely recognize the Hutsul motifs in the embroidery of this collection.
