Fabrics are probably the second thing we notice, after the beautiful embroidery. Of course, the appearance of the fabric also influences how we perceive both the vyshyvanka and even the person wearing it. But our ancestors were so dedicated that they skillfully embroidered on various types of fabric, and we’ve carried on this tradition, incorporating modern technologies—so now we have a huge selection of fabrics for vyshyvankas.

Among the most popular types of natural fabrics are authentic linen and hemp, everyday cotton, luxurious silk, and the now-forgotten wool and leather. Artificial fabrics can be divided into true artificial fabrics (such as staple fiber), synthetic fabrics (such as kapron, nylon, or lavsan), and blended fabrics (for example, linen blended with lavsan).

Cross-stitch—is that what came to mind? But just imagine: there are over 100 embroidery techniques in Ukraine! Each one is unique. Let’s take a look at some of the most famous ones:

• Satin stitch embroidery—it’s ideal for creating the most precise floral and animal motifs, as the stitches are even or slanted,
• Lace—most often used to decorate tablecloths, scarves, and tulle—is usually associated with festivity,
• Cross-stitch is a technique that remains popular today, based on the interlacing of threads,
• Appliqué embroidery is very painstaking work, similar to a mosaic, only “soft,” since the patterns are made up of scraps of different fabrics,
• Shtapivka — a counted embroidery technique that creates light, somewhat translucent patterns,
• Bead embroidery has its own charm and stands out with its sparkle in the light,
• Machine embroidery—thanks to modern technology—can faithfully reproduce many traditional techniques.

Styles of Embroidered shirts by Style and Purpose

The design of the vyshyvanka also evolved in a very interesting way. Even the Scythians wore so-called tunics—long shirts with embroidery. Interestingly, this type of clothing was the same for both women and men, since at that time there were neither pants nor skirts. The necklines of these tunics were not gathered. To this day, this style—albeit slightly modernized—remains popular in some regions of Ukraine, and it forms the basis for embroidered dresses.

Short shirts appeared later, along with a neat sleeve cut—tapered for men (so they wouldn’t get in the way while working) and gathered for women (to make it easier for women to do household chores and roll up their sleeves higher). Collars also appeared on men’s shirts, along with a variety of necklines for women’s shirts.

Now let’s highlight the different types of vyshyvankas—it’s fascinating to learn about and distinguish between them, and this will help you make an informed choice when selecting a shirt.

• The traditional embroidered shirt has an authentic look thanks to its linen fabric with a grayish or milky hue; it is embroidered with cross-stitch and lace, possibly using satin stitch, and combines black and red threads, or blue ones.

• The patriotic vyshyvanka is also made of linen, but is embroidered exclusively with classic black and red threads.

• The modern vyshyvanka is the most versatile type of Ukrainian embroidered shirt, as it can combine different embroidery techniques and colors, feature a variety of cuts and unique cuffs, and be adorned with embroidered elements to suit any taste—all while still resembling traditional clothing.

• Men’s vyshyvankas are most distinguished by their long, dense geometric patterns that extend all the way to the neck, where the shirt is tied or buttoned, as they feature collars, cuffs, and necklines. In the past, the types of men’s vyshyvankas also depended on a man’s age and marital status.

• Women’s embroidered shirts—special attention is paid to the sleeves, which are usually lavishly embroidered and lack cuffs. Women’s vyshyvankas also traditionally lack a neckline, featuring cutouts instead.

Characteristic features of vyshyvankas from different regions of Ukraine

Ukraine—though a single country, it’s so vibrant! Every region has its own dialects, traditions, and cultural characteristics. And what about vyshyvankas?

• For example, in the Hutsul region, you can’t help but call vyshyvankas the freest of all. They have no restrictions; traditionally, they can be embroidered with any colors, techniques, and patterns—you can even add golden accents. And all of this—on a single shirt!
• The Kyiv region is famous for its vyshyvankas featuring geometric patterns; black and red are the primary colors here, and green accents are also popular.
• Among the vyshyvankas of the Luhansk region, polychrome cross-stitch patterns predominate.
• Yavoriv vyshyvankas are very “floral,” typically featuring plant motifs and embroidered using the satin stitch. The patterns looked very vibrant because yellow, red, and blue threads were traditionally chosen.
• In the Kharkiv region, embroidery was done with thick, very colorful threads, which made the patterns stand out in relief. So many different types of patterns and techniques were used here that it’s hard to even single out the main ones.
